How do I feel today? Desperation. Misery. Upon waking, paralysis. Eating a burger overlooking the ocean has quelled some of the unease. Guilt over excessive consumption drives an edge of tension into the picture, contradicting some of my imagined pathos / drama. Erik thought I was on some kind of conceptual holiday — he offered a Skype support session. I’m too broke to enter the clubs. Will I rise to the challenge? What am I made of? Is this all some kind of game of belonging? Why do I try so hard? The Italians, they don’t aspire to party. They live it. F- said partying is desire and image without substance. There were these English girls back at the hostel, insistently asking one another if they’d thrown up or not. When I told them I’d be staying for a month, one girl exclaimed “A month! That’s a lot of partying.” The Italians on the other hand thought, “Only one month?”

They really jumped on my entrance yesterday, offering spaghetti, chicken, vodka, I felt unarmed and defenseless, at a loss, and excruciatingly exhausted, emotionally desolate, alienated, relieved by their company, and yet craving solitude and the cessation of their endless chatter — which continued through the whole of the night, in spite of intermittent sojourns to the clubs (Space — where one of them works, the one who was hit by her boyfriend?) I didn’t know how to match the calibre of their volume. I wonder if it would mean anything to them if I brought up Dante. In a way, they are both my saving grace and the new bane of my existence. How to live with them remains to be seen. How to be human — maybe they can help me.

I am having a baby.

It has not been an easy decision, but there are bigger fish to fry than uneasy fears of lapsing into obscurity and social irrelevance. From some spheres, I have already conducted general movements of withdrawal; these days, succumbing only to Pessoa’s “Book of Disquiet.” Perhaps I shall finish writing the last 700 pages of “In a Bar Called Mexico” ¹ and finally be able to dispense, once and for all, with that genre, the hardest and most treacherous of epics—the autobiography. Anyhow, laying low for a while—but not for too long.

A few days ago, Willie Brisco², friend, fellow Canadian artist, writer, curator, and self-contained enterprise, sent me an email quoting Adorno, attached to the note, “Menippean Satire.” Of course, as the story goes, Willie also writes an autobiography. We had even sworn to publish them together, a split-novel, like a split-LP. Our promise has since derailed into a year of silence and willful separation. And, down this withering trail of oblivion, the opening remarks (quote) to my novel followed, forgotten:
